.teaching a toddler.

one of my initial greatest fears while we spoke of adding to our family was making sure jack understood that he was always going to be as loved as he is now [if not more!] and just how special he was always going to be to us. that adding more kids to our family was not going to change our feelings for him in the slightest, but in fact add to our happiness. but how do you teach and explain that to a toddler just learning to talk himself?!

i have no direct answers to this question, but with jack's ever increasing interest in some of my friends newborn babies during playdates, i can't help but feel as though we must be doing something right for our family and in raising him.

he is loving. he softly strokes their hair and chubby soft cheeks without being prompted.
he is thoughtful. he brings books to the babies to read and tries to share his cheerios by putting them directly in their mouths [we obviously watch him closely, not too worry!].
he is kind. and sits by the babies as though he doesn't want them to be alone.
he is helpful. he brings blankets to cover them and tries to rock them in their bassinets.
and he is playful. sharing his toys and playing peek-a-boo constantly with them.

[note: all of these things above are true. i've witnessed them personally and it amazes me how a 23 month old child can be so loving and so perceptive to a smaller 'mini'. it just blows my mind]

so while it's an ongoing process with a toddler, explaining that very shortly we'll have two babies of our own to love and play with, we're actually having quite a fun time with it. so in case anyone is going through this situation as well, here are some books and activities we play on a regular basis in preparation for our little twins arrival this coming week.

books:
-following in the beautiful andrea's footsteps, i jumped on her weekly book club train and decided to share a few of our favourites to read recently....no surprise that with all the baby talk going on in this house, his fav's have all been these 'baby's' books.
rocker babies wear jeans by michelle sinclair colman
the boss baby by marla frazee
everywhere babies by susan meyers
snuggle the baby by sara gillingham [jack's fav!]
babies, babies, babies! by catherine and laurence anholt

games / activities:
-we took jack to ikea one weekend and discovered a large bin of babies for $9! we allowed him to pick out any two babies he wanted to love and take home. he of course choose, two identical boys that look exactly like himself which i found quite amusing and perhaps a sign for what's to come?! jack has loved those two babies immensely the past few weeks and it's been fun watching him put them to bed [in his crib], share his soothers and juice with them, and kiss them 'night night'.
-playdates with other babies! and lots of them! totally helps.
-where's momma's babies? jack loves to peek up my shirt at my ever growing belly and we alway make a fun game of it. it usually ends in plenty of belly kisses for his babies.
-before bed each night, pete and i will throw out a bunch of names and ask jack if he can repeat them and if he likes them. it's always cute hearing him muster through the different names in his little voice and then tell us he likes every single name we say!

and please share! what are you doing with your oldest in preparation for another?

.the cookie party.

so five months ago [gosh, where has the time gone?!] i hosted a cookie taste-off party.
i personally can't take credit for the idea - that baby was sprung from the blog, you are my fav - and i basically edited it a bit and called it my own.
see, i was considering hosting this get together the minute i came across the invitation on pinterest and couldn't stop thinking about how much fun it would be. i mean, friends + cute kiddos + sweet delicious cookies? yes, please!
after what seemed like the most unlucky week to throw it [we had a few kiddos come down with croup, a few failed babysitters, etc, etc.] i gathered a small group to head on over to my place and just throw all caution to the wind by feeding both mama's and their kids as many cookies as we could put into our bellies.
the cookie contest was scored by counting the highest number on this score sheet. each cookie was put onto a plate marked with a # [as anonymous as i could get] and each # was marked and tallied on the score sheet. the winner was the highest score counted. yay!
all in all, i think it turned out pretty darn good.
^^the aftermath^^
each momma took home some extra treats in these adorable 'goodies' bags, as well as a recipe card for each cookie. [i've attached the recipes below for you to print for yourself at home. just click on the cookie for the pdf].

hershey's crinkle cookies | best ever chocolate chip cookie | brown sugar oatmeal coconut chewies | double chocolate chunk cookies | cookie fail 2013 | sweet potato cookies |

the winner was this sucker right here....heather's brown sugar oatmeal coconut chewies. super tasty, super great texture and just all around delicious! heather also went home with our small prize: fred's number cookie cutters + a mixing bowl + sprinkles :)
*i also wanted to take special mention of chelsea's 'cookie fail' recipe that she created herself! she got the directions a little mixed up and thought that you had to create your own cookie recipe from scratch, which wasn't actually part of the rules, but hey! i enjoy the enthusiasm! haha!

in the end, i think everyone had a nice time and i can't wait for the next little get together! thanks again girls!

.jack's firsts: the zoo day.

well, we had another 'first' for the wee boy; a trip to edmonton valley zoo

last friday, and our only sunny morning amidst a particularly rainy week, jack and a few of his friends ventured out and had a little visit with the animals. while jack may have been indifferent to it all, the older children sure had a blast checking out all the wild creatures! lucy [the elephant] was awake and walking around. the zebras were munching on fresh grass. the owls kept a watchful eye out. and all our wild animals were happily mesmerized.

oh, and a carousel may have been rode too!

it was a good day indeed.
^^^this boy. i mean!
gosh, i am so lucky. ^^^
^^that is one cool dude, right there^^

^^baby jack!^^
^^baby oliver!^^
^^some eat cookies, other eat strollers. no biggie^^
^^little girl, big elephant^^
some days i am just so thankful for this boy, and our time together. things really do move way to fast and i want to soak up as many 'first's' as i can each and every day.

.red shoe crawl 2013, whyte avenue.

this past sunday, my little family and a couple close friends of ours attended the red shoe crawl on whyte avenue. i have to tell you, as this was my first time attending, i was so pleasantly surprised at how well organized and how fun it all was! i knew going in that the proceeds went to a great cause [the ronald macdonald house, a charity that helps give sick children what they need most - their families] so i was on-board 100% with whatever the outcome was, but then actually enjoying myself the entire time!? well, that was just a double bonus!! this year the event sold out, which is amazing, and i was just happy that i was able to participate in it.

we strolled around the streets of whyte ave, popping into participating stores for samples of wine [thanks eyecare group!], beers [thanks mkt!], frozen coffees [thanks second cup!], an assortment of appetizers [thanks to the food fighter truck, chianti's, mkt, naanolicious, the tinbox, sabzy, and the keg!] and an assortment of sweets [hello! cookies from crave, ice cream from marble slab and frozen yogurt from [my fav] tutti frutti!]. and that was just to name a few [we actually didn't even make it to all that stops!].

the weather held off for most of the day, with it only sprinkling on us the last half hour which worked out great because it was the little man's nap time then anyways ;)
a big thanks as well to the red shoe society for putting on a great event, not only for the ronald macdonald house, but for the city of edmonton too! i will be definitely signing up for the 124street crawl in the fall [september, to be exact!].
^^ our attempt at a selfie family photo!^^
^^a sleeping babe is evidence of a successful day! yay!^^
